Requirements for submitting files to Horton Printing
These requirements must be followed or will cause an increase in production time in the graphics department and an increase to the cost of your job if we make the appropriate changes. Horton Printing will do its best to catch any problems when preflighting the documents before going to the presses, but we cannot be held responsible for errors in documents that we did not create.

All jobs that are ran to .lm are printed at 175 LPI (Lines Per Inch) @ 2400 DPI (Dots Per Inch) if you desire other speci.cations we must know this up front or you will be charged for the .lm that was wasted. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call, we want to work with you to make your job come out the best it can.

 Images
Images are the one of the must important aspects to keep in mind when creating your document because they can make or break the final output of your document.

There are only 4 types of images that are acceptable

  • Bitmapped - Black and White (can be changed to a spot color in application)
  • Grayscale - 256 shades of gray (can be changed to a spot color in application)
  • EPS - Vector artwork (can hold spot colors and process colors)
  • CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (used in four color process)
All images must be the size of the image used in the document, EPS .les can be resized without losing value because they do not contain pixels. By increasing the image size in the document you are stretching the pixelation of the image and will cause poor printing results.

Images should be no less than 300 DPI, less than this will cause poor print quality.

When creating the image you should keep in mind the final output. This will have a lot to do with which application it should be created in. If you are creating a single color logo or image you can use an image created in Photoshop or other imaging programs. That image (Grayscaled or Bitmapped) can then be taken into the page layout program and changed to a spot color. If creating a multi spot color image the spot colors MUST be assigned in Photoshop or the image has the be cut into the sections that are to be designated to the specific spot colors in the layout program. The best way to create a multi spot color logo is to create a vector image which can be created in applications such as Illustrator or Corel and convert it to EPS format, remember when doing this if fonts are used in the artwork it is best to convert fonts to outlines that way there will be no font issues when trying to print.

If you are creating a four color process job the images MUST be in CMYK unless they are grayscale images than the need to be grayscale. Image saved as file types are very important, there are several types to save as, but only a few will give you a good result.

TIF’s and Bitmap’s - They save at 16 million colors and will give you the best results when working in color and work the best in most applications, it is best to use TIF’s

JPG - Can be used but remember jpg’s only save at 256 colors so you are losing a lot of color value when you save it as a jpg file. Most digital cameras save their images as jpg’s so if you plan on using a digital camera to take the images for your job you have already lost a lot of color value. Once saved as a jpg file you cannot regain anything by saving it as another file type.

  Applications Accepted
Horton Printing can handle most .le types that are commonly used, with this said there are some applications that will give you better control and end results than others. We will go brie.y into, if you need to know more detailed information on some application call us and we will be happy to help out.

  Applications
The following is a list of all applications supported, all versions as of December 2005.

QuarkXPress, Pagemaker, InDesign, Illustrator, Freehand,Corel, PDF, Word and Publisher

Here is the breakdown on how to get the files to us correctly. One thing to remember is that creating a Press Ready PDF file will help us speed up the process of printing your documents.

Once the document is complete and approved by the customer and ready to send to Horton Printing.

QuarkXPress - File Menu - Collect for Output - Follow prompts, make sure to collect all fonts and images, it is best not to save this to the same directory as the original, but that is your choice. After this is completed you will have the doc., doc. report, a folder for fonts and a folder for images. Zip or Stuff (depending PC or Mac) these items and send.

Pagemaker - Utilities Menu - Plug-ins - Save for Service Provider - Go through tabs making sure that there is no problems. You can test your .les in Pagemaker and if you need more info on this give us a call and we will step you through the processes. Zip or Stuff (depending PC or Mac) these items and send.

InDesign - File Menu - Package - Follow prompts include all fonts and images, .ll in any information you feel is necessary and package. You can also convert fonts to outlines. Zip or Stuff (depending PC or Mac) these items and send.

Illustrator, Freehand and Corel - Pretty much work the same, best way to handle these .les are to save a copy of the original, using the copy convert all fonts to outlines and gather the images used in the document. Zip or Stuff (depending PC or Mac) these items and send. Corel you can go to the File Menu and Collect for Service Bureau and follow prompts.

PDF (Portable Document Files) - When creating these .les from the original document you must make sure to create a PRESS READY PDF (anything else will result in poor print quality), make sure to embed all fonts, do not down sample any images and leave colors unchanged, if your document is already set to the speci.cations needed. Zip or Stuff (depending PC or Mac) these items and send.

Word and Publisher - It is best to create a PDF .le from these documents especially Word, you can open a word file on 3 computers and have a different layout on all 3 depending on the default margins set. So beware when sending a Word Document to anyone. Publisher you can collect for Service Provided and we can print from this file. Zip or Stuff (depending PC or Mac) these items and send.

  Fonts
Something to keep in mind with fonts (which we all love to use all we can) remember to use only fonts that you can select. We know that in all applications that the font toolbar allows you to make a font bold or italic but do not use this if you want your font to print correctly. Why? Because that font may not actually exist when you collect it for output. So, if you want Times Bold select it from the font menu not Times and then Bold it with the toolbar. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not and it is better to be safe than sorry. If you have questions about this please call us. One thing to do if you are using an application that can convert fonts to outlines, do so and that will guarantee we will not have any font issues.
